Calm Through Every Step

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation Dentistry uses sedative techniques to help you remain calm, relaxed, or sleepy during dental care. The level may range from awake relaxation with inhaled nitrous oxide to deeper sedation through oral or IV delivery. General anesthesia places you fully asleep and is provided by an anesthesiologist. Before treatment, your health history and plan are reviewed, then you are monitored throughout the procedure.

Services We Offer

Sedation Dentistry Services We Offer

Dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, and long visits can make needed care feel overwhelming. We offer sedation options matched to your needs, helping you feel calmer, stay comfortable, and move forward with treatment at either Harmony Dentistry location.
Breathe in gentle relaxation while staying awake, then return to your day quickly as the effects wear off soon after treatment.
A prescribed pill helps you feel drowsy and at ease, making longer visits feel shorter while someone you trust drives you home.
For deeper relaxation during extended care, IV sedation lets us adjust your level throughout treatment, and you may remember little of the visit.
Complex or lengthy care can pass peacefully while you sleep, with a trusted professional anesthesiologist and our team monitoring your vital signs throughout.

THE LAUGHING GAS OPTION

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, is the gentlest option we offer and the one most patients start with. You breathe it through a small nose piece, and within a few minutes the edge comes off. You stay awake and able to talk with us the whole time, just calmer and less aware of the sounds and sensations that usually put you on edge.

When treatment is finished, we switch you over to pure oxygen and the effects clear within minutes. That quick recovery means you can drive yourself home and go back to your day, which makes nitrous a practical choice for routine cleanings and fillings, not just longer procedures.

RELAXED BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients who feel their anxiety building days before an appointment, a prescribed pill taken beforehand can change the whole experience. You arrive already relaxed and drowsy, settle into the chair, and often remember very little of the visit afterward. You stay conscious and responsive throughout, simply far more at ease than you would be otherwise.

Because the medication stays in your system for several hours, someone will need to drive you to and from our office and stay with you until it wears off. Sedation dentistry in Fortville is planned at a prior visit, so we can review your health history and prescribe the right dose ahead of time.

DEEPER COMFORT FOR LONGER VISITS

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation is delivered through a vein, which lets us adjust your comfort level moment to moment rather than waiting for a pill to take effect. Most patients drift into a deeply relaxed, twilight state and remember little or nothing of the appointment. Your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels are monitored continuously from start to finish.

This is a strong fit for implant surgery, full mouth work, or any visit long enough that sitting through it awake feels unrealistic. Several procedures can often be combined into one appointment, which means fewer trips in and less time away from work. You will need a driver for the day.

FULLY ASLEEP, FULLY MONITORED

General Anesthesia

For the most complex cases and for patients whose fear has kept them out of a dental chair for years, general anesthesia means sleeping through treatment entirely. A licensed anesthesiologist administers and manages your care throughout, working alongside our clinical team so that we can focus on the dentistry while your safety is watched by a dedicated professional.

Extensive treatment that would otherwise take several appointments can frequently be completed in a single visit. Recovery takes longer than with other options, so plan on rest for the remainder of the day and arrange for someone to stay with you. We review your full medical history before scheduling.

Feel Calm About Dental Care

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety can make necessary care feel harder than it needs to be. Sedation Dentistry creates a more peaceful experience, helping you feel supported before, during, and after your visit. As you discover the right level of relaxation for your needs, moving forward with care can feel more manageable and empowering.
Settle anxious thoughts before care
Racing thoughts can begin well before you reach the dental chair. Sedation Dentistry helps quiet that fear, so you can arrive feeling more prepared and move through your visit with greater ease instead of avoiding care altogether.
A lengthy appointment can feel overwhelming when you are watching every minute pass. Sedation helps the experience feel shorter, making it easier to complete extensive or multiple treatments while keeping your day from feeling consumed by dental care.
Sounds, smells, and unfamiliar sensations may make dental visits especially difficult. With sedation, those triggers can feel less overwhelming, helping you remain more comfortable while receiving the care your smile needs.
A strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still can create real barriers to treatment. Sedation helps make visits more manageable, giving you a practical way to receive important care without feeling defined by those challenges.
One difficult dental experience can make future appointments feel impossible to face. A calmer visit can rebuild trust in the process, helping you approach ongoing care with less worry and a stronger sense of control.
Questions about dental care can add another layer of stress when you already feel uneasy. Your needs are considered carefully, so you can understand what to expect and feel supported from your first conversation through recovery.

You move forward with completed care and a more peaceful relationship with dentistry.

What to Expect

The sedation dentistry procedure in three clear steps

Knowing what to expect can make sedation dentistry feel more manageable. We listen to your concerns, review your health, and explain your choices clearly, helping you feel more in control before care begins and supported throughout your visit.
1

A thoughtful safety review

Your visit begins with a conversation about dental anxiety, sensitivity, gag reflex concerns, and your treatment needs. We review your health history and answer your questions before recommending the safest, most effective sedation option for you. This gives you space to feel heard instead of rushed into care.
2

Comfort during treatment

Once your sedation plan is ready, nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia may help you feel calm, relaxed, or sleepy. You may remain awake or sleep more deeply, depending on your needs. Our team monitors you closely while you receive the care you need with less stress.
3

A calmer recovery

After treatment, some sedation wears off quickly, while deeper sedation may mean resting and having someone drive you home. As you recover, the worry and tension of dental care can feel more manageable. You leave with completed care and the reassuring feeling that future visits can feel calmer too.

Peaceful dental visits ahead

Frequently asked questions

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Questions about Sedation Dentistry are common, whether you feel anxious, have a strong gag reflex, or need longer care. We explain your options, safety steps, and what recovery may involve. Reach out to us with any concerns not covered below.

Is Sedation Dentistry safe?

Yes, when provided by trained professionals, Sedation Dentistry is designed with safety in mind. We review your health history, current prescriptions, and overall health before choosing an option. During treatment, our team monitors your heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure.
We offer four levels: nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, while deeper options create more relaxation and may require a driver home. We recommend the safest fit for your needs and procedure.
You may benefit if dental visits cause anxiety, you have a strong gag reflex, or sounds and sensations feel overwhelming. Sedation may also help with long appointments, multiple treatments, special needs, or certain health conditions. We review your situation before recommending care.
Sedation helps you feel calm or sleepy, but it does not replace local numbing. We use appropriate anesthesia to keep the treatment area comfortable and explain what you may feel. Tell us about sensitivity or discomfort so we can respond during your visit.
The timing depends on your treatment and the sedation level selected. Nitrous oxide typically wears off quickly after the mask is removed. Oral, IV, and general anesthesia can require more recovery time, so we will explain when you can resume normal activities.
Before treatment, we discuss your health history, plan, and questions. Our team then administers the selected sedation and monitors you throughout care. With lighter sedation, you may return to your day quickly. Deeper sedation requires someone to drive you home and let you rest.
Aftercare depends on the sedation level you receive. Follow our instructions, arrange transportation when required, and plan time to rest after deeper sedation. You should also avoid making important decisions until you are fully alert. We review these details before you leave.
Yes, sedation can reduce gagging and sensitivity to dental sounds, smells, and sensations. This may make examinations or longer treatment easier to complete. We also take time to understand your triggers and build a comfort-focused plan around your needs.
Feeling unsure is understandable, and you do not need to decide before your questions are answered. We explain each option, discuss what you may feel, and monitor you throughout treatment. Our comfort menu also includes blankets, headphones, aromatherapy, and in-room TVs.
The right option depends on your anxiety, sensitivity, health history, treatment length, and level of relaxation desired. Nitrous oxide keeps you awake, while IV sedation creates deeper relaxation and general anesthesia puts you fully asleep. We guide you through the differences before treatment.

Meet your Doctors

Your Smile Transformation Team

Our doctors listen closely, explain everything, and take dental anxiety seriously. From cleanings to full-mouth implant work, you’ll get comprehensive care at both our Westfield and Fortville offices without being sent elsewhere.
Dr. Barton served three years as a United States Air Force dentist before opening her own practice. She has placed more than 1,000 dental implants and now teaches implant dentistry to other clinicians. Her focus: making sure you never dread a dental visit.
A Carmel native and Purdue graduate, Dr. Hinds worked as a dental assistant before earning her dental degree at Indiana University. She starts by listening, then builds a plan around your goals, which is why even our most nervous patients relax with her.
Dr. Neidlinger treats dentistry as both science and art, blending advanced technology with plenty of patient education. Her own braces sparked that fascination, and now she loves showing patients exactly what she sees. Fun fact: she was a featured twirler in Purdue’s marching band.

We really like Harmony Dental. Today, Dr. Hinds and Dental Tech Michaela took excellent care of me. I had to have 4 cavities filled and one crown replaced. They made sure I was comfortable during the procedures. (love the fleece blanket they provided) and I appreciated that they asked several times if I needed a break since I was going to be in the chair for an extended period of time (which was the option I chose so I could get everything completed in one visit). Harmony Dental is the best!

She was absolutely wonderful, took time to explain everything in an understandable manner and made the entire experience at the new patient very comforting.I was also very impressed with Dr. Hynes.
