Gum Care at Every Stage

What Is Periodontal Treatment?

Periodontal Treatment is care for gum disease, from early gingivitis, or inflamed gums, to more advanced periodontitis. It begins with an evaluation of your gum and bone health. Treatment may include scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar below the gumline and smooths tooth roots. Gingival irrigation and laser decontamination target bacteria around the gums. Follow-up periodontal maintenance monitors the tissues at regular intervals.

Services We Offer

Periodontal Treatment Services We Offer

Bleeding gums, tenderness, or persistent inflammation can make everyday oral care feel frustrating and may threaten your teeth over time. Our periodontal treatment options address gum disease at every stage, helping you protect your smile and overall well-being with a clear plan.
Plaque and tartar below your gumline are removed while tooth roots are smoothed, giving inflamed gums a chance to heal and reattach.

Once treatment is complete, you receive regular cleanings, often every three to four months, to keep gum disease controlled and protect your smile.

Targeted irrigation and laser care reduce bacteria driving gum inflammation, supporting healing so your gums feel healthier during daily brushing and eating.

DEEP CLEANING BELOW THE GUMLINE

Scaling and Root Planing

When gum disease takes hold, plaque and tartar build up below the gumline where brushing and flossing cannot reach. Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that clears those deposits away and smooths the tooth roots, giving your gums a clean surface to heal against and reattach to. We numb the area first, so most patients are surprised by how comfortable the visit feels.

Treatment is usually done in sections over one or two appointments, depending on how much of your mouth is affected. If you feel anxious about the length of the visit, we can add nitrous oxide or another sedation option. Periodontal treatment in Fortville begins here, because everything that follows depends on a clean foundation.

KEEPING GUM DISEASE IN CHECK

Periodontal Maintenance

Gum disease does not fully go away once it has been treated, but it can be held steady for the long haul. Periodontal maintenance visits, usually every three to four months instead of every six, keep bacteria from rebuilding below the gumline. Each visit includes a cleaning below the gums, updated measurements of your gum pockets, and a look at how the tissue is responding.

Coming in more often gives us the chance to catch changes while they are still small and easy to manage. Your hygienist tracks your numbers visit to visit, so you can see progress instead of guessing at it. For patients in active gum care, our Perio Maintenance Package covers these cleanings on a set annual fee.

TARGETED SUPPORT FOR HEALING TISSUE

Gingival Irrigation and Laser Decontamination

Deep cleaning removes the buildup, and these two treatments go after what stays behind. Gingival irrigation (an antimicrobial rinse delivered directly into the gum pockets) flushes out bacteria that scaling alone can leave in place. Laser decontamination follows, using focused light energy to reduce bacteria in the tissue and encourage healing without cutting or stitches.

Both treatments are quick, comfortable, and paired with your cleaning rather than scheduled separately. Patients with deeper pockets or gums that stay inflamed after a deep cleaning tend to benefit the most. Our Perio Maintenance Package includes four of these gum treatments each year, alongside your maintenance cleanings.

Protect Your Smile's Foundation

Benefits of Periodontal Treatment

Gum disease can progress quietly, making it easy to underestimate what your smile needs. Periodontal Treatment gives you a clear path to address the problem, protect your oral health, and stay involved in your care. With thoughtful guidance and ongoing support, you can feel more prepared for a healthier future.
Keep daily plans moving
Gum disease can become a constant concern when it goes unmanaged. Periodontal Treatment helps support a healthier mouth, so dental problems are less likely to interrupt your work, plans, and everyday routine.
Advanced gum disease is a leading cause of tooth loss. Addressing it early helps protect the teeth and bone supporting your smile, giving you more opportunity to preserve what is naturally yours.
Healthy gums contribute to more than your mouth. Because research connects gum disease with concerns such as heart disease and diabetes, caring for your gums gives you another meaningful way to support whole-body health.
Gum health can change over time, even after your condition improves. Ongoing monitoring helps us recognize new concerns sooner, so you can respond before small changes create larger problems.
Uncertainty can make gum concerns feel more overwhelming than they need to be. We explain what your smile needs and guide you through each stage with gentle, patient-focused care, helping you move forward with greater ease.
Once your gums are healthier, consistent follow-up helps keep them in a stable maintenance phase. You gain a clearer routine for protecting your smile and greater peace of mind about your ongoing oral health.

You move forward with healthier gums, protected teeth, and greater whole-health peace of mind.

Patient FAQs

Periodontal Treatment FAQs

Questions about Periodontal Treatment are natural, especially when gum symptoms, deep cleaning, or ongoing maintenance are involved. We explain what to expect, how care supports your teeth and gums, and how treatment fits your smile journey. Reach out to us with anything not covered below.

What is Periodontal Treatment?

Periodontal Treatment addresses gum disease at different stages, from early gingivitis to more advanced periodontitis. Our care may include deep cleaning, periodontal maintenance, gingival irrigation, laser decontamination, and ongoing monitoring to reduce harmful bacteria and protect your teeth and supporting bone.
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline. We also smooth the tooth roots, giving your gums a cleaner surface where they can heal and reattach. The treatment plan depends on your gum health.
You can expect gentle, comfort-focused care throughout Periodontal Treatment. Deep cleaning may cause some tenderness or sensitivity afterward, depending on the condition of your gums. We explain each step, listen to your concerns, and discuss comfort options before treatment begins.
Treatment time varies with the extent of gum disease and the care you need. Deep cleaning may require planned appointments, while maintenance visits are scheduled more often than routine cleanings. We will explain your expected timeline after evaluating your gums and bone health.
If your gums bleed, feel tender, pull away from your teeth, or show signs of disease, Periodontal Treatment may help. We evaluate your gums, teeth, and supporting bone before recommending care. Early gingivitis and advanced periodontitis each require a different approach.
Once active gum disease has been treated, periodontal maintenance helps keep it in a controlled phase. These cleanings are often scheduled every three to four months, based on your needs. Regular monitoring also helps us respond to changes in your gums and bone health.
We begin by reviewing your concerns and examining your gums and supporting bone. Depending on your needs, care may include deep cleaning, gingival irrigation, or laser decontamination. We then explain your home-care routine and the follow-up visits needed to monitor healing.
Follow the home-care guidance we provide, including regular brushing and flossing. Keep your periodontal maintenance visits so we can remove buildup and monitor your gums over time. Let us know about new bleeding, tenderness, or changes instead of waiting for your next appointment.
Without care, gum disease can continue affecting the tissues and bone that support your teeth. It is also a leading cause of tooth loss. Research links gum disease with broader health concerns, including heart disease and diabetes, so early attention matters.
The right alternative depends on your gum health. Mild concerns may call for improved home care and closer monitoring, while established disease may need deep cleaning, maintenance, irrigation, or laser decontamination. We compare the options with you rather than recommending a one-size-fits-all plan.

Our doctors listen closely, explain everything, and take dental anxiety seriously. From cleanings to full-mouth implant work, you’ll get comprehensive care at both our Westfield and Fortville offices without being sent elsewhere.
Dr. Barton served three years as a United States Air Force dentist before opening her own practice. She has placed more than 1,000 dental implants and now teaches implant dentistry to other clinicians. Her focus: making sure you never dread a dental visit.
A Carmel native and Purdue graduate, Dr. Hinds worked as a dental assistant before earning her dental degree at Indiana University. She starts by listening, then builds a plan around your goals, which is why even our most nervous patients relax with her.
Dr. Neidlinger treats dentistry as both science and art, blending advanced technology with plenty of patient education. Her own braces sparked that fascination, and now she loves showing patients exactly what she sees. Fun fact: she was a featured twirler in Purdue’s marching band.

We really like Harmony Dental. Today, Dr. Hinds and Dental Tech Michaela took excellent care of me. I had to have 4 cavities filled and one crown replaced. They made sure I was comfortable during the procedures. (love the fleece blanket they provided) and I appreciated that they asked several times if I needed a break since I was going to be in the chair for an extended period of time (which was the option I chose so I could get everything completed in one visit). Harmony Dental is the best!
